  1. At my company employees with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. have to pay a much higher deductible on their health insurance (the company calls it a “wellness discount” but it’s really just a surcharge for people with health issues). Interestingly enough, smoking isn’t considered when determining if someone gets the “healthy lifestyle” discount. It seems illogical, as smoking (a completely voluntary activity) is known to affect cancer rates, heart and lung disease, etc. at least as much if not more than the often genetically based problems they do consider “bad lifestyle”. Also interesting is that I work in an industry where smoking is part of the culture, and both employees and customers are about twice as likely to smoke as the general population.

    1. Thanks for the response! It’s always interesting to hear from readers and their personal reactions to these stories. Although much of what I read in the wellness space seems to tell me that smokers tend to get higher premiums/ higher health care costs, that’s obviously not always the case.

Also interesting response concerning the “discount vs. surcharge” debate. This is especially applicable now because the EEOC is currently conducting a court-ordered review of its wellness program rules, particularly involving the use of incentives. See link here: https://www.erisapracticecenter.com/2017/08/court-throws-monkey-wrench-into-wellness-programs/ . This story is from August, although I haven’t seen anything change significantly in this matter since this story was published.

I’ll be curious if after this is resolved, anything changes with the rate at which companies can discount/ surcharge health costs.

      1. Interesting that the arguments seem to in part hinge on whether or not the programs are “voluntary”. Our program purports to be voluntary, but if you don’t volunteer, you automatically pay more… or as they put it, you don’t qualify for the discounts.
